RESIDENCIES
YAC’s Artist Residency Program
is the result of a creative partnership between educators,
artists and YAC staff. We designed a sequential learning experience
in the arts that supports your school curriculum and social
development objectives. The residency program offers students
an opportunity for in-depth learning in, about and through
the arts with talented and experienced artist educators. Students
exercise critical thinking skills through the language of
the arts and explore curricular concepts through multiple
learning pathways. The arts empower students! Through sequential
learning and opportunities for successful exploration in the
arts, students develop, refine and select ideas and see them
take shape. They expand their tools for learning and for communicating
their knowledge and ideas.
RESIDENCY COMPONENTS
A. PLANNING TIME: Artists include up to
2 hours of planning with a school team. We suggest your team
consist of: classroom teacher(s), administrator, arts discipline
teacher(s), other support staff as needed, and parent(s).
We require that someone from the school staff (perhaps in
partnership with a parent) act as the residency coordinator.
B. PERFORMANCE OF DEMONSTRATION: Through
performance or demonstration by the artist, children have
the opportunity to see the artist’s own work, his/her
passion for the work and understand what is possible.
C. EXPLORATION IN THE ARTS: Students will
receive repeated classroom instruction over an extended period
of time.
D. CULMINATION: An important aspect of the
learning process is time to reflect on the experience and
articulate the process through the language of the arts. Residencies
may result in a final student presentation, literary piece
or art exhibit. Residencies may culminate in an “informance”
or less formal share of activities and process, or achieve
closure through more intimate classroom sharing experiences.
E. EVALUATION: School participants and artist
will have an opportunity to “debrief” after the
residency to exchange constructive feedback.
