Ten Lessons the Arts Teach
By Elliot Eisner
The arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships. Unlike much of the curriculum in which correct answers and rules prevail, in the arts, it is judgment rather than rules that prevail.
The arts teach children that problems can have more than one solutionand that questions can have more than one answer.
The arts celebrate multiple perspectives. One of their large lessons is that there are many ways to see and interpret the world.
The arts teach children that in complex forms of problem solving purposes are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity. Learning in the arts requires the ability and a willingness to surrender to the unanticipated possibilities of the work as it unfolds.
The arts make vivid the fact that neither words in their literal form nor number exhaust what we can know. The limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition.
The arts teach students that small differences can have large effects. The arts traffic in subtleties.
The arts teach students to think through and within a material.
All art forms employ some means through which images become real.
The arts help children learn to say what cannot be said.
When children are invited to disclose what a work of art helps them feel, they must reach into their poetic capacities to find the words that will do the job.
The arts enable us to have experience we can have from no other source and through such experience to discover the range and variety of what we are capable of feeling.
The arts’ position in the school curriculum symbolizes to the young what adults believe is important.

Reviews
From the East Granby Creative Arts Council, November 2006:
”We had the pleasure of having Ginga Brasileira come to both our middle and high school today. The performances were awesome. We are very pleased and so were the teachers. The students enjoyed the show immensely. This group was professional, interesting and lots of fun. They related well to the students and were able to get even the high school kids to wake up and participate!! Our sincere thanks to you for having such a fantastic group of performers to choose from. We would recommend them to everyone”. Kyle Spears
From the Clintonville Elementary School, North Haven:
“This performance was full of such contagious energy and enthusiasm that our students and teachers are still raving about it today. Teaches and parents a like remarked on Efraim's ability to connect with all students. We were impressed with the various ways her changed the show to match the needs of his audience, while teaching valuable information about he history and culture of Brazil. All of the performers had our gymnasium electrified with energy, our students enthusiastically engaged and our teachers and parents dancing and singing. This was the best show we have had at Clintonville for all these reasons. People also let me know that they noticed a true kindness of spirit towards children of any age and ability, which highlights their understanding of child development and their genuine people skill. I am not surprised that Efraim is on of Young Audiences Master Teaching Artists, this accolade is well-deserved”. Aimee McLaughlin-Kobierowski, Grade 5 Teacher
What the staff at CT Children’s Medical Center said about Blue Jupiter’s visit to the Center: “The members of Blue Jupiter did such a fantastic job yesterday at CT Children’s Medical Center. The musicians sang to every child there and saw hope in all of their eyes. This day not only touched the children, but deeply affected the vocalists of Blue Jupiter as well. In fact, after spending a few hours there Blue Jupiter donated CD's to the children to play in their CD's players in each of their rooms”!
One staff member stated, “I just wanted to thank you again for coming in to perform for the kids. One young girl was blown away by Blue Jupiter. She fell asleep with the picture of Blue Jupiter in her hands. It meant a lot to her. It's not every day that people get to have a talented group of musicians perform right in front of them-up close”!
