COLIN COOTS
Visual Artist

Colin Coots is an artist who is dedicated to
bringing his love of art to students and people everywhere. He graduated
from the Cleveland Institute of Art and pursued further studies at Bowdoin
College in Maine. His work has been exhibited at museums and galleries
in the USA and London. He now dedicates himself to developing his own
art and to teaching art primarily through his residency programs where
his excitement and passion for his work are an inspiration to the children.
Sculpture Projects
During the past 17 years as a Young Audiences Artist, Colin Coots designed
a large variety of painting projects with students from
Kindergarten through grade 12. Most are indoor sculpture projects, and
include relief sculpture as well as fully 3 dimensional
projects. Projects are usually
large pieces constructed with luan plywood forming the basic armature.
Sculptures most often are completed with paper mache or canvas, and are
painted with acrylic (water based) house paint. The finished art is light
weight, durable, flexible, colorful and easily repaired. Materials usually
cost under $300. Colin has also created several more permanent outdoor
sculptures with students. The cost of materials for these sculptures is
considerably higher, due to the need for the material to withstand the
elements. On all sculpture projects, students do about 80% of the hands-on
labor.
Portrait Painting Projects
Colin Coots has designed a large variety of painting projects with students
from Kindergarten through grade 12. Frequently projects involve painting
portraits of famous Americans, historical figures, African Americans,
Native Americans, etc. There are a wide variety of possible formats: one
example uses 4'x4' sheets of luan plywood. Portraits are painted onto
the plywood using acrylic (water based) house paint. Finished portraits
are light weight, portable, durable, very colorful, and can easily be
displayed or hung indoors or outside. Materials cost is usually under
$300.

ignite in students a sense of wonder in the myriad forms of artistic expression
available to them. Length: 60 minutes
