The Legend of Pedro De Urdemalas

Teatro del Sol y de la Luna (TSL)
The group was started in the
summer of 2006 as part of New
Haven Theater Company’s
mission to create theatrical
productions for audiences that
are often under served by
traditional theater. NHTC’s
Creative Director, T. Paul
Lowry, grow up in a Arizona in a
Hispanic household and felt the
folklore of Latin America and
the southwest would make
wonderful narratives for the
stage. The first production for
TSL was presented as part of the
2006 Hispanic Heritage Month
Festival sponsored by New
Haven’s Arte, Inc, with
subsequent presentations at the
2007 International Festival of
Arts and Ideas and 2007
Hispanic Heritage Month.
The Legend of Pedro de Urdemalas
The Legend of Pedro de Urdemalas is a collection of
Latin American folklore presented through storytelling,
music, dance, puppetry and mask work. Adapted from
stories from across Latin America and the southwest, The
Legend of Pedro de Urdemalas presents stories infused
with imagination and creativity filled with interesting
characters including magical birds, beautiful senoritas,
jealous kings, and dancing dogs. Dias De Los Muertos
(Day of the Dead) inspires the entire shows design using
the colorful costumes and stylized masks.
