MOTOKO
Asian Storytelling

Born and raised in Osaka, Japan, Motoko's stories raise
the young audience's awareness and understanding of
Asian history and culture. Motoko is a mime-storyteller as
her art is a unique fusion of mime and oral tradition. Her
stories highlight the universality of human experience and
include folktales from Japan, Korea, China, Southeast Asia and
personal memories from her childhood in Japan.
Folktales from Asia (Grades K-12)
Clad in a Japanese jacket called a “haori”, Motoko tells
folktales from Japan, China, Korea and Southeast Asia
combined with participatory songs and mime.

A long-time student of Chinese language and folklore, Motoko made a trip to China in 2006! She visited a tiny rural village of Geng Cun (population 1,200) with 600 year old storytelling tradition, and collected folktales. In her new program she shares some of the tales and songs she learned there, and discusses her experiences with the village elders and children. Calligraphy and other art activities may be included.

The Girl in the Mirror (Grades 7-12)
An anthology of visual poetry for teens, this program addresses
relevant issues for middle and high school students. This
Mime program includes:
"The Girl in the Mirror",
"The Party" "The Game",
"Driving Lesson" and "My Son's Room".
Artistic, thought provoking and humorous, this program demonstrates the value of nonverbal communication and the
relationship between mind and body.

Eshu Bumpus and Motoko combine talents to perform Asian
and African folktales followed by simultaneous workshops in
creative writing.
