Addressing Diversity Through Music
Cyd Slotoroff is a professional singer-songwriter, guitarist, and recording artist with over 20 years experience. As a performer, educator, certified music therapist and as a diversity trainer with the Anti-Defamation League, Cyd addresses the issues important to youth with a unique blend of sensitivity, creativity, and humor.
Ms. Nancy Juliano, Teacher at Shepard Glen Elementary School in Hamden had this to say about Creating Community Appreciating Differences, "I feel that the small group presentation encouraged the students to become involved in the follow-up discussion. Creating Community: Appreciating Differences
(Grades 3 - 12, 25 students or 1 class)
Cyd Slotoroff employs the power of contemporary folk music to
challenge students to greater compassion for those who are excluded
and made to feel different. Through singing evocative songs and
soliciting discussion drawn from feelings and issues in the songs,
Cyd guides students to see how they treat each other and how
everyone is affected by the pressures to fit in. In a relaxed and direct
style, Cyd encourages students to take a stand for themselves and
others to create a more safe and respectful school community.

Songs of the Civil Rights Movement (Grades 5-12)
Educational and entertaining, this program introduces students to
the legendary civil rights music of the 1950's and 60's. Weaving in
stories and historical notes, Cyd engages students in dialogue to
help them understand the social, emotional and political context of
the songs and of the movement. Students also learn the critical role
of music in sustaining the civil rights movement.
